In Chapter 8 (“Trust Doesn’t Come Easy”) of Let It Go, T. D. Jakes offers the following advice, most appropriate for us as we look to revision our ministries and open ourselves to God’s leading: “No one rebuilds on what they have lost (italics are the author’s). Rebuilding begins when you appreciate what you have left.”
Bishop Jakes adds that often we don’t know what truly matters until we’ve lost everything else. Or, as Joni Mitchell so quaintly sang in “Big Yellow Taxi”:
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone? . . .
While we’ve lost the ministry position we once had, we still have our calling to ministry and the desire to revision it, Christian friends and family to support/mentor us, and the foundation of God’s Word and Sacraments.
