Overcoming fear

By Dave Henning / July 27, 2012

Pastor Steve Mays presents 3 eternal perspectives on conquering fear in Chapter 3 of his book Overcoming.  The first of the perspectives is that God will hold us together.  As a result of his Damascus Road experience, St. Paul knew with certainty that God had delivered him, always was with him and was working on his behalf.  Sometimes, however, adversity causes us to question that perspective.

Pastor Mays explains: “Sometimes we give up on God.  Sometimes we do not see God because all we see is the troublesome situation and our problems.  We are so concerned about the past, worried about the present, and so frightened about the future. . . . I believe that God wants us to know today that He will hold us together, even though we feel that our lives are falling apart.”

St. Paul wrote the following words while imprisoned in a Roman dungeon, awaiting death.  He recognized that God was there for him in the midst of his suffering: “That is why I am suffering as I am.  Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Hims for that day.” (2 Timothy 1:12)
