“Rise! Let us go!”

By Dave Henning / December 22, 2012

Pastor Bill Hybels concludes Chapter 6 of The Power of a Whisper by reflecting on Jesus’ darkest night, in the Garden of Gethsemane.  When darkness encroaches, the author states, “God will be near, he’ll seek us out and he’ll speak words of insight that cast light into darkened souls.”

One seldom-noted moment in the Garden of Gethsemane especially captured Pastor Hybels’ attention.  Between sweating drops of blood as He prayed and His arrest by the Roman soldiers, Jesus was emboldened to lay down His darkest-night burden and simply “get up”.  Pastor Hybels envisions Jesus telling His disciples that despite this ultimate of darkest nights, great light soon will shine again.

That night in the Garden of Gethsemane can bring hope and encouragement to our darkest nights as well.  Bill Hybels concludes:

“That Light can come into your life too.  The God who is near to you- the God who actively seeks you out- this God whispers light into your darkest night.”

Isaiah 9:2- “The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
