Everyone needs a Nathan

By Dave Henning / December 24, 2012

In Chapter 8 (“When God Speaks Through Others”) of The Power of a Whisper, author Bill Hybels asserts that “everybody needs a Nathan” to help us apply God’s Word to difficult situations in our lives, such as a ministry downsizing or position loss.  Just as King David needed (and heeded) the wise counsel of Nathan that confronted him with the truth of his behavior regarding Bathsheba and Uriah, so we need a trusted Christian friend to mentor us on our journey toward healing and ministry revitalization.  Pastor Hybels explains:

“If you and I claim to believe God’s Word, inevitably the time will come when we will need some help applying it to our lives.  God didn’t create us to live in a vacuum.  We need others.  We need someone with skin on to help us achieve the righteousness we crave.”

In other words, Pastor Hybels says, we would do well to “cultivate a ‘David’ state of mind”.  David turned from following a destructive path toward life and restoration.

“Without good direction, people lose their way; the more wise counsel you follow, the better your chances.”- Proverbs 11:14 (The Message)
