Mirroring Jesus’ reflection

By Dave Henning / April 1, 2013

In Chapter 25 of The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren relates the story of a silversmith who was asked how he knew when the silver was pure.  He replied, “When I see my reflection in it.”   Similarly, when we have been refined by trials and respond as Jesus would, people will see Jesus’ reflection in us.  The author offers 3 keys to developing this response (Pastor Warren’s words are in bold type):

1.  Remember that God’s plan is good.   It is critical that we remain focused on God’s plan rather than our pain or problem.  Corrie Ten Boom explained the power of focus in her book The Hiding Place: “If you look at the world you’ll be distressed.  If you look within, you’ll be depressed.  But if you look at Christ, you’ll be at rest.”  Engaging in short-term thinking is counterproductive.  We need to remember that while our pain is temporary, our reward is eternal.

2.  Rejoice and give thanks.   Pastor Warren notes that the Bible tells us to give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:15), not for all circumstances.   We can rejoice in “God’s love, care, wisdom, power, and faithfulness” no matter what happens.

3.  Refuse to give up.   We need to be patient and persistent.  As we understand and take hold of the eternal consequences of our character development, Rick says we’ll pray fewer “Comfort me” prayers and more “Conform me” prayers.
