Worshipping God in spirit and in truth

By Dave Henning / April 19, 2013

In the second of his Spiritual Maxims, Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection (that’s his full name) lists 3 ways to worship God in spirit and in truth:

1.  When we worship God  in spirit and in truth we are worshipping God as we ought to worship Him.  Our “humble and true spiritual adoration” resides in the depth and center of our souls, visible only to God.  The more we worship in this manner it becomes part of our very nature, as if God were one with us and we were one with Him.

2.  In order to worship God in truth we must recognize Him for who He is and ourselves for who we are.  Brother Lawrence states that in doing so we recognize that “God is infinitely perfect, infinitely worthy of worship, and infinitely distanced from evil.  He is infinitely greater than all the divine attributes ascribed to Him by man.”

3.  It is not possible to worship God in truth unless we’re able to admit, as Brother Lawrence notes, “that we are entirely contrary to Him”.  Even so, God is willing and desirous to make us like Himself if that’s what we want.
