In Chapter 9 (“The Eyes of Jesus”) of Missing Jesus, Charles Morris states that even ministry can become an idol. We can put our heart and soul into ministry, yet harbor idol thoughts in our hearts. Although it’s not our intention to get drawn into the idolatry of our culture, it happens before we know it. We can’t serve two masters.
Idols work at us from two directions. They may be tied to our desires or our fears. We can walk away from our idols, if only we realize that we’re free to do it. As Janet explains, God set us free from trying to change ourselves. We don ‘t have to be like Gideon, who smashed his father’s statue of Baal:
“Finally I (Janet) realized that Jesus is my Gideon. He will smash our idols. He will heal our waywardness, he will make us fruitful. He will constantly renew our love for him and set us free from serving other gods.”
Everything in life has dual potential. Either we can hold it tight or give it to Jesus. We can worship the good thing or we can worship Jesus through it.
