Being rich but living poor

“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know that this love surpasses knowledge- that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”- Ephesians 3:17-19

In Chapter 11 (“As Encounter: Seeking His Face”) of Prayer, Timothy Keller reminds us that “prayer is a conversation that leads to an encounter with God.”  For this to happen, we need more than an informed mind.  We need an engaged heart.  John Calvin once described this experience:

“For the Word of God is not received by faith as it flits about in the top of the brain, but when it takes root in the depth of the heart.”

Paul’s exhortation in Ephesians is that Christians must avoid being rich but living poor.  The only way to avoid being rich but living poor is through encounter with God.  When objective reality and subjective experience come together, we sense the power of what we have been given in Christ.  As a result, our attitudes and feelings are altered.
