Keeping heaven on our minds

By Dave Henning / January 29, 2017

“Keeping heaven on our minds is healthy for our souls.”- Pastor Judah Smith

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.  For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”- Colossians 3:2-3

In Chapter 10 (“Heaven”) of How’s Your Soul?, Judah Smith states that the more we focus on Jesus, we realize life points to God.  Hence, we only find true, lasting, and eternal satisfaction in God.  Therefore, thinking about eternity provides one of the healthiest soul activities.

Furthermore, Judah exhorts, heaven should be on your mind when you talk to God.  Judah explains why this is important:

” . . . earth is what consumes our minds more often than not.  Even when we approach God in prayer, we often do so from a limited, finite perspective.  We see the size of our problems instead of the size of our God.  We wee our weakness instead of God’s strength.”

However, when, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we put our faith in Jesus, our souls become alive.  As a result, our lives now revolve around heaven rather than earthly priorities, problems, and passions.

Thus, Pastor Smith explains why the ultimate goal of our souls centers on heaven.  The author writes:

“Our souls find their homes in God, and heaven is the context in which that relationship will flourish after this life ceases.  Therefore, our souls are healthiest when they are focused on the reality of an eternity with Jesus.  Our souls need heaven.”
