“I didn’t sign up for this”

By Dave Henning / March 14, 2017

“Maybe you are in a situation in life where you are saying on a regular basis, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’ “- Dr. Tony Evans

Dr. Tony Evans begins Chapter 13 (The Perspective of Detours)” of Detours with the story of an employer who sent a Christmas memo to all his employees.  The memo stated the employer planned to give a Christmas gift to all his employees.  In response, the employer asked them to make a contribution to a specific charity.  He looked for 100 % company-wide participation.

However, one employee refused to cooperate.  He claimed his Christmas bonus belonged solely to him.  Therefore, he declined to give to the charity.  When the employer called him into his office, he gave the stubborn employee two options: (1) contribute or (2) lose his job.  Given those choices, the employee responded: “Well, no one really explained it to me quite like that before.  Yes, I’ll give.”

Hence, Dr. Evans notes perspective:

  • brings wisdom to our whims and clarity to our choices
  • gives us discernment between our detours and our distractions

Most of us, the author notes, still wait for the time we’ll reach the full potential of our divine design.  As a result, in order for God to bring this about, three things must come together.   Dr. Evans explains:

“Destiny involves the coming together of three things — your good, God’s glory, and the advancement of His kingdom through the impact on others.  Only when you have the true perspective of destiny can you fully live it out. . . . God wants 100 percent participation in His kingdom agenda, but it’s your choice if you participate or not.”

Today’s question: How often have you thought or said, “I didn’t sign up for this”?  Please share.
