The bedrock for everything else

“We have the Scriptures given to us by God, and they are the bedrock for everything else.”- John Eldredge

As John Eldredge continues the Summer section of Walking with God, he addresses the importance of the Bible in our walk with God.  Mr. Eldredge underscores:

“God speaks to us through the Bible.  And what is said there has more authority than anything else in our lives.  It is the bedrock of our faith, the test of all things, a living connection to the heart and mind of God — when we approach it with the help of the Spirit of God.”

Thus, John stresses, we must connect our walk with god to our reading of Scripture.  In addition, the more we know the Scriptures and internalize them, the better our walk with God.  No precious personal word or cool insight compares to the written Word.

Although commentaries, concordances, and Bible Study software assist us in learning the Bible, John suggests another rich resource.  That resource consists of simply asking God, What would you have me read today?  Next, Mr. Eldredge cites John 10:4- “When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.”

Certainly, we believe that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, leads us.  However, John asks, do we make a conscious effort to follow Christ in all the in-between times?  For that’s where we really live life.

Therefore, making that conscious effort enables us to transition to a better life, talking to Jesus throughout the day, following His lead.  John summarizes:

“Give it a try.  Ask God what he would have you read.  Settle yourself, quiet your heart.  Let go of the pressure that says you have to hear from him right now or things aren’t’ right between you.  Things are fine.  You are his.  Rest your heart and relationship there.”

Today’s question:  How do the Scriptures remain your bedrock?  Please share.
