“For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”- 1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJV)
Sara Hagerty continues Chapter 1 of Unseen as she adds that, in quiet, “unproductive” times, buried parts of our thinking surface. Especially when we’re caught being insignificant, we suddenly feel the need to justify our dormant existence.
However, as Ms. Hagerty notes, when she felt the urge to quit her boutique job, that impulse revealed a deeper question. She, as well as we, need to ask God: How do you see me, especially when I feel unproductive and unsuccessful? How do you see me when I feel naked without my life’s impact to hide behind? (emphasis Sara’s)
As a result, Sara began a new dialogue with God. Therefore, Sara didn’t include a plea for God to use her in someone else’s life. Nor did she plead with God to make her life matter. Rather, her conversation with God focused on His care for the inner workings of her heart.
Hence, Sara now saw her age-old God as newly vibrant. She started to believe God actually liked her right where she worked, in her view, unproductively. In the pages of His Word, Sara observed God validate the hearts of those seeking Him in secret. Sara explains:
“In every passage, in every verse, I was clawing my way into what life was to me: the delight on God’s face turned toward me. I’d been fiercely searching the crowd for that face for years, thinking I would find it only in the praise or approval among the masses, in the eyes of other people. But now I could see it manifest in God’s face. God delighted in me even when I felt I least deserved it.”
