Christians who belie the heart of God

“Christians who belie the heart of God with their lack of love . . . project their own imperfections onto God, and He becomes ‘God in the Hands of Angry People.’  The result is way too many people rejecting God for all the wrong reasons!  They reject God for who He’s not.  They reject a reflection of people who project their imperfections onto God.”- Mark Batterson

“Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?”- Romans 2:4 (NIV)

In Chapter 5 (“God in the Hands of Angry People”) of Double Blessing, Mark Batterson references a famous sermon by Jonathan Edwards.  Credited with catalyzing the Great Awakening, the sermon’s titled “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.”

However, Pastor Batterson takes issue with the title — as well as the tone — of that sermon.  Yes, Mark agrees, tough love demands tough sermons on tough topics.  But, we must not allow tough words to betray the heart of our heavenly Father.  Thus, we’re sinners in need of a Savior.

Certainly, Pastor Batterson stresses, God gets angry.  As a result, it’s critical that we understand what triggers God’s anger.  Therefore, Mark states, King Solomon gave us a laundry list of seven things that anger God in Proverbs 6:16-19.  So, the author asks, why does God hate those things?  Because He loves us!  Hence, Mark adds:

“Yes, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.  But when it comes to repentance, this is not the approach God takes.  It’s His kindness that leads us to repentance.  When God wants us to change, He shows His kindness.  If that doesn’t work?  He shows us even more kindness!”

Today’s question: During or after your job loss, did you encounter Christians who belie the heart of God with their lack of love?  Please share.
