The missing puzzle piece that fits snugly

By Dave Henning / November 20, 2020

“Like the missing puzzle piece that fits snugly and completes the picture of our lives, God Himself is our best resource — the safest, best attachment we could ever have.  And He is the only One who doesn’t need to make repair attempts (although thank goodness the rest of us can make them when we blow it with one another).”- Aundi Kolber

“When [the youngest son] was still a long way off, his father saw him.  His heart pounding, he ran out, embraced him, and kissed him.  The son started his speech: ‘Father, I’ve sinned against God, I’ve sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called your son ever again.’ But the father wasn’t listening.”- Luke 15: 20-22 (MSG)

Aundi Kolber concludes Chapter 3 of Try Softer as she states that she found Jesus at a Billy Graham crusade.  However, finding Jesus didn’t take away her pain or severe dysfunction at home.  But, it planted a seed of deep hope for Aundi to cling to with every ounce of strength she had.

Above all, Aundi stresses, through His Word Jesus shows we have good reason to hold on to Him.  Therefore, the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15) represents one of Aundi’s  favorite Scripture passages.

From an attachment perspective, Aundi deems the parable striking.  Because it describes God as a good, kind, compassionate, stable, loving and safe parent.  And, Aundi especially loves how The Message paraphrase states that as the son apologized, the father wasn’t listening.  Instead, he busily prepared for his son’s homecoming party.

In conclusion, Aundi offers these words of hope:

“God doesn’t always save us from the consequences of our actions.  But He doesn’t celebrate our pain either.  He doesn’t ask us to minimize it or pretend it isn’t there.  Instead, He offers His love and unending compassion as we walk through whatever we’re facing. . . . God is always on our side, providing comfort in ways that even our closest allies, friends, parents, and therapists cannot.”
