The creation story – a microcosm

By Dave Henning / April 22, 2021

“The creation story is a microcosm of so many things.  God said, ‘Let there by light,’ and those words are still creating galaxies at the edge of the universe.  If God can do that with just those words, what are we worried about?  We already trust Him for the big things like keeping the planets in orbit.  All we need to do now is trust Him for the little things, which is everything else by comparison.”- Mark Batterson

Mark Batterson concludes Chapter 7 of Win the Day as he exhorts us to go ahead and dream big.  But start small.  For example, legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden began his first practice of the year as follows.  First, he showed his players the proper way to pull up their socks.  Next, he demonstrated the correct way to lace their shoes.  Finally, Coach Wooden showed the player how to tuck in their jerseys and knot the drawstrings of their shorts.  That’s how you build success!

In addition, Mr. Fred Rogers had a profound impact on so many.  According to his wife Joanne, Fred believed the space between the television and the children watching it represented holy ground.  Therefore, when no one’s looking, simply fly the kite with all your heart.

During the last decade of John Wooden’s life, someone asked him what he missed most about coaching.  His one-word answer? – practice.  For those who attain the highest levels of success, their ultimate goal reflects their desire to become better than they were the day before.  Deliberate practice makes perfect.

In conclusion, Mark offers two suggestions to help you inch closer to where you want to be:

  1. Jobs you detest help you to appreciate the jobs you do like.  Few people find their dream job on their first attempt.  That sweet spot where your God-given gifts and God-ordained passions overlap.
  2. The key to landing your dream job = doing a really good job at a really bad job.

Today’s question: How do you see the creation story as a microcosm of trusting God?  Please share.
