Sheila Walsh concludes Chapter 10 of Holding On with the final eight names for God found in Psalm 23.
3. Jehovah-Shalom (the Lord my peace). This name first appears in Judges 6. There the angel of the Lord appeared to a young man named Gideon. Then the angel told Gideon that God chose him to deliver His people from their enemies.
As a result, in response, Gideon built an altar and named it Jehovah-Shalom. Most significantly, God offers that same peace to us today.
4. Jehovah-Rophe (the Lord my healer). This name refers to physical as well as spiritual healing. However, in contrast to God’s people giving Him a name, here God reveals this name to the children of Israel. This happened after they crossed the Red Sea.
5. Jehovah-Tsidkenu (the Lord is our righteousness). Christ is your Savior, no matter how many times you’ve failed or fallen down. Therefore, Christ alone makes you right with God.
6. Jehovah-Ezer (the Lord is my help). As Charles Spurgeon once said, our God comes riding on the heavens to help us. Certainly, this happens in ways we can’t even imagine.
7. Jehovah-Nissi (the Lord my standard of victory). In Exodus 17:15, we read that “Moses built an altar there (at Rephidim) and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means ‘the LORD is my banner’).”
8. Jehovah-M’Kaddesh (the Lord who sanctifies me). In the Old Testament, the children of Israel possessed 613 laws they needed to keep to remain holy in God’s sight – 365 don’ts, 248 dos. However, for Christians, Christ alone makes us holy.
9. Jehovah-Manah (the Lord is my portion). Over and over we read in the psalms that the Lord is our portion. Above all, the Lord remains our portion for whatever we lack.
10. Jehovah-Cheleq (the Lord my inheritance). Deuteronomy 18:2 contains this name for God. It refers to the Levites, the only tribe receiving no physical land from the Lord. Because they led Israel in worship.
