Left alone with our questions?

By Dave Henning / December 15, 2022

“We are not left alone with our questions.  It is not up to us to solve the riddles of our existence.  We have a helper, a divine instructor.  He will save us from the cul-de-sac of confusion and the dead end of doubt.  He does this by enrolling us in the primary course of his university: Jesus Christ.”- Max Lucado

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”- Galatians 5:25 (NIV)

In Chapter 2 (“Come Alongside Me”) of Help is Here, Max Lucado underscores that the Holy Spirit isn’t simply a divine companion who keeps us company.  Because the Spirit’s overarching mission involves teaching us about Jesus.

Above all, J. J. Packer beautifully points out that the Holy Spirit’s downright bullish on Jesus.  Writing in Keep in Step with the Spirit, Packer states:

“It is as if the Spirit stands behind us, throwing light over our shoulder, on Jesus, who stands facing us.  The Spirit’s message to us is never, ‘Look at me; listen to me; come to me; get to know me; but always, ‘Look at him, and see his glory; listen to him, and hear his word; go to him, and have life; get to know him, and taste his gift of joy and peace.’ ”

In conclusion, Max exhorts, we need to develop, maintain, and model a childlike spirit.  Teachable, willing to let the Spirit lead.  Because the fruit of the Spirit grows out of the soil of humility.

Furthermore, invite the Holy Spirit into your world as you begin each day.  Also, pause and listen, keeping an ear inclined toward the Spirit.

It’s our privilege to consult the Spirit of God, to stay in mindful communion with Him.  Day by day and moment by moment.  And take with you the assurance that the Spirit smiles with you as you smile.  After all, Max reminds you, the Holy Spirit is your teacher.

Today’s question: What Bible verses confirm that we’re never left alone with our questions?  Please share.
