Sharing good news raises joy levels

“Sharing good news with someone, who in turn actively celebrates that news, has a profound way of increasing everyone’s joy.  It not only multiplies the benefits of the positive event; it strengthens the bond between the two people involved, which raises joy levels.”- Randyn Frazee

“For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?  Is it not you?  Indeed, you are our glory and joy.”- 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 (NIV)

Randy Frazee concludes Principle #9 of The Joy Challenge as he cites a study done by psychologist Shelly Gable.  In her study, Dr. Gable uncovered four different ways people respond to someone else’s good news.  Note: only the first response contributes in a positive manner to the relationship.

1.  ACTIVE-CONSTRUCTIVE: One issues an enthusiastic response.  In addition, the person engages a conversation that allows the other person to linger.  As well as expand on the good news they just shared.

 2.  PASSIVE-CONSTRUCTIVE: This response involves short comments that show very little interest in the news shared.  As a result, that terse comment effectively stops that conversation on a dime.  Or the topic changes.

3.  ACTIVE-DESTRUCTIVE: Here one pours cold water to douse the fire of the good news.  For example, one might express hope that the good news bearer can actually do the job.  And sometimes the person making such a comment truly believes their statement displays a helpful stance.

4.  PASSIVE-DESTRUCTIVE: Finally, this serves as the worst response of the four.  Because the person chooses to ignore the good news altogether.  So, they simply move on to another topic of interest only to them.

In conclusion, Randy tells the story of Bob Buford, a very successful businessman from East Texas.  Bob owned a company that provided cable services to millions of homes.  Above all, as a devoted Christian, Bob used his fortune to fund and fuel the success of pastors.  Including Randy.

Today’s question: How do you go about sharing good news that raises joy levels?  Please share.
