“A reality distortion field is a force field. It’s refusing to accept limitations. It’s bending reality with willpower . . . mind over matter. Spiritually speaking, it’s getting out from under the eight-foot ceilings we put on God. . . . It’s impossible only when it isn’t.”- Mark Batterson
“Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one went in. Then the LORD said to Joshua, ‘See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands.”- Joshua 6:1-2 (NIV)
Mark Batterson continues Chapter 3 of A Million Little Miracles as he underscores that when God performs a miracle, you never go back to square one. Because, when managed properly, miracles earn compound interest. Hence, you steward that miracle when you believe God for even bigger, even better miracles. Above all, as the God of miracles gets bigger and bigger, so does your faith capacity.
In the Lewis Carroll classic Through the Looking Glass, Alice claims that one cannot believe impossible things. In response, the White Queen reasons that Alice needs more practice. Then the White Queen notes that, at Alice’s age, she practiced believing impossible things for thirty minutes a day.
Certainly, the arrow of time points in one direction. Yet God, who created the dimension of reality called time, isn’t limited by time. Rather, He’s an ever-present help in time of need. In a geographical sense, He’s here, there, and everywhere. As Thomas Merton once observed:
“The Lord travels in all directions at once. The Lord travels from all directions at once. Wherever we are, we find that He has just departed. Wherever we go, we find out that He has just arrived before us.”
Most significantly, Mark notes, the presence of God is one of those mysteries and miracles we take for granted. As a result, until we can’t feel God’s presence, we don’t miss it.
But God often reveals His presence in mundane situations. And it’s in the most mundane of situations that we find a million little miracles hiding in plain sight.
