“Theologically speaking, there are two kinds of revelation. The Bible is special revelation, and I believe it is God-breathed. You don’t just read the Bible; the Bible reads you. . . . If all truth is God’s truth, then every ology is a branch of theology. That’s where general revelation comes into play. God has left us clues in His creation.”- Mark Batterson
“Since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.”- Romans 1:20 (NIV)
Mark Batterson concludes Chapter 4 of A Million Little Miracles with a question: What is your unique way of worshipping the Creator? To answer the question, consider the context God has placed you in. Then, think of ways to express praise at home, at work, and at play. In addition, come up with ways to turn your daily routines into worship rituals.
When German troops invaded Bielsko, Poland, on 3 September 1939, fifteen-year-old Gerda Weissmann and her family bunkered themselves in a Jewish ghetto. But in June of 1942, the Nazis sent Gerda’s mother to a death camp. Gerda, though, spent the next three years in a concentration camp. Next, Gerda survived a 350-mile death march.
Above all, by the time Lieutenant Kurt Klein rescued her, Gerda weighed only sixty-eight pounds. A human skeleton with grey hair. Eventually, the two fell in love and married. Most significantly, one finds this short story by Gerda Weissmann Klein inscribed on the sixth tower of the Holocaust Memorial in Boston. It reads:
“Ilse, a childhood friend of mine, once found a raspberry in the [concentration] camp and carried it around all day to present to me that night on a leaf. Imagine a world in which your entire possession is one raspberry and you give it to a friend.”
Consequently, the raspberry gifting occurred on holy ground, in a holy moment. Gerda died in 2022, less than one month short of her ninety-eighth birthday.
In conclusion, Mark exhorts, accumulate experiences, rather than possessions. Because that’s the stuff miracles are made of.
Today’s question: How do you interpret Mark’s statement that the Bible reads you? Please share.
