“God sang the universe into existence and it’s that song that sustains the universe. . . . But wait — there’s more. God rejoices over us with singing. God is singing songs of deliverance all around us all the time! These songs may be inaudible to human ears, but that doesn’t make them any less real. . . . All of creation is singing back to the Great Conductor who sang them into existence.”- Mark Batterson
“The mountains and hills will burst into song before you and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.”- Isaiah 55:12 (NIV)
Mark Batterson continues Chapter 5 of A Million Little Miracles as he cites an article by Alex Gray (“Humans Have More Than 5 Senses”). In his article, Gray stresses that we might have as many as thirty-three of these senses. Yet, despite the remarkable nature of these senses, our awareness of reality consists of a very thin slice!
Hence, Pastor Batterson asks, what’s the connection between our added senses and a million little miracles? Certainly, most miracles exist outside our sensory range. However, that fact doesn’t make those miracles any less real. Mark compares such miracles to AM and FM radio frequencies. Unless we dial into the right frequency, the others go unnoticed.
Consequently, Mark quotes legendary entomologist Lewis Thomas, who underscores the fact that:
“If we had better hearing, and could discern the descants of sea birds, the rhythmic tympani of schools of mollusks, or even the distant harmonies of midges hanging over meadows in the sun, the combined sound might lift us off our feet.”
In addition, Mark relates that each kind of atom in the universe sings a different song. Because every atom emits sound at a unique frequency. For example, the carbon atom produces the same harmonic scale as Gregorian Chant. Also, the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras described a stone as frozen music.
Finally, Thomas Carlyle once said, “Music is well said to be the speech of angels. Nothing among the utterances allowed to man is felt to be so divine. It brings us to the infinite.”
