“As we begin to grasp the absolute ability of god, we see its contrast with our inability. And if we humbly accept our limits, we can gladly rest in his vastness. We can move from fear into peace, into assured faith in the Lord of Hosts. Now, there’s a key word in this foundational concept. Did you catch it? Humbly. This is the turning point of managing fear differently in our hearts.”- Joel Muddamalle
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea.”- Psalm 46:1-2 (ESV)
As Joel Muddamalle moves on in Chapter 2 of The Hidden Peace, he notes one benefit of cultivating humility. That benefit? Helping us see every situation and circumstance as something God rules over. And can bring good out of.
Therefore, Joel notes, Psalm 46 invites us to a greater awareness of God. Consequently, that awareness directly impacts how we see ourselves, others, and our circumstances.
Thus, in v. 2, the psalmist used the imagery of seas and mountains. Because those two symbols held specific meaning for the ancient Israelites. Mountains represented places of stability and security, unshakable and unmovable. However, seas symbolized places of disaster and chaos that brought destruction.
So, even though mountains might be thrown into the seas, nothing ever possesses the power to move God. Hence, when morning dawns (v. 5) our unmovable, unshakable peace-bringing God provides our help. As a result, Joel observes, each new day serves to remind us of the hope we have in God.
In conclusion, Joel exhorts, God puts His overwhelming strength on display every morning when the sun rises. As the psalmist stresses, God “breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariot with fire (Psalm 46:9, ESV).”
Thus, in the next blog, Joel notes our tendency to overlook the battle language of v. 9. In reality, that battle language is quite impressive.
