Saying yes to transformation

“When we adopt humility, the same attitude of Jesus, we’re taking his approach to life.  We’re saying yes to transformation, welcoming the Spirit to shape us into the image of Christ.”- Joel Muddamalle

“In your relationship with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”- Philippians 2:5 (NIV)

In Chapter 9 (“Cultivate It: Begin the Practice”) of The Hidden Peace, Joel Muddamalle notes that, for many years, Christian thinkers have compared humility to the fertile soil in which godliness can grow.  As South African pastor Andrew Murray (1828-1917) wrote in Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness:

“Humility is the only soil in which virtue takes root; a lack of humility is the explanation of every defeat and failure.”

Consequently, Joel underscores, humility plays a foundational role as the Holy Spirit works to transform us.  In addition, Joel notes, humility starts the Christian life and is also included in a list of Christian virtues.  Hence, as Joel explains and sums up:

“We develop humility by first becoming aware of reality — of the greatness and grandeur of our God, of our own value and worth, of the dignity of others.  Then we accept that the greatness and kindness of God will now change our perspective.  For us, pride is poison and humility is life.  The creation agrees with the Creator.”

Lastly, as Philippians 2:5 states, we adopt the same attitude or mindset as Christ Jesus.  Thus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we live out humility on a daily basis.

Above all, Joel counsels, we must do all three parts.  Otherwise, it’s like trying to grow a plant without using soil.  Fertile soil forever separated from a seed wastes excellent soil.  Also, it’s tragic for the seed.  Because the seed lacks fertile soil to mature.  As a result, the seed never develops its full potential.

In conclusion, Joel states, if we only possess humility at the beginning of our faith, the rest of our Christian life suffers.  Just as missing soil explains why a plant dies.

Today’s question: How does the Holy Spirit help you in saying yes to transformation?  Please share.
