Cultivate humility consistently

“Humility needs to be the soil of our Christian lives that we tend to, cultivate, and return to consistently. It needs to become a part of us.  Then it can equip us for today and teach us how to endure whatever comes our way tomorrow.”- Joel Muddamalle (emphasis author’s)

Joel Muddamalle concludes Chapter 9 of The Hidden Peace as he stresses the need for a deep-rooted humility.  Because, without it, one finds it almost impossible to rejoice in God, glorify Him in His greatness, anticipate His continued goodness, and exalt Him for His faithfulness.

As a result, Joel takes time to look at the framework of Mary’s song, the Magnificat.  Joel notes that this poetic song resembles Hannah’s song in 1 Samuel 2:1-10.  The framework contains four steps to create your own simple song of remembrance.

1.  Rejoice in the greatness of God.  Write down two or three things that remind you of how big God is.

2.  Glorify God.  Next, take those two or three things and write out a simple prayer of praise.  Because that allows the thankfulness in your heart to turn into praise on your lips.

3.  Anticipate God’s continued faithfulness.  God’s been so good to you.  Therefore, you possess the assurance that God’s goodness will continue.  Consequently, Joel urges, take time to write down a specific incidence of His faithfulness to you.  And then take note of how you know you can trust Him to remain faithful in the future.

4.  Exalt God.  Above all, the empty grave assures us of God’s promise fulfilled.  In addition, the empty grave serves to remind us that God always follows through on His promises. Hence, anytime you feel doubt, remember that Jesus’ grave is empty.  And has stayed empty.

So today we exalt God because He never changes — and His peace and goodness will never end!

In conclusion, Joel exhorts:

“To cultivate humility is to practice it.  There is no one greater who practiced and embodied the life of humility than Jesus himself.  Let’s start learning all we can from him.”
