A journey of cooperation

“This [path to transformation] isn’t so much about having more willpower or trying harder as it is about practices that help us surrender our minds to God and allow his truth to reshape our thinking.  It’s a journey of cooperation with the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to think in new ways.”- Kyle Idleman

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”- Romans 12:2 (NIV)

In Chapter 9 (“The Special Ops of the Mind: From Reactive Thoughts to Strategic Victory”) of Every Thought Captive, Kyle Idleman asks us to picture a highly trained special forcers operative.  Decked out in full gear, wearing night vision goggles.  The works.  They move silently through enemy territory, with every one of their senses on high alert.

Above all, their mission involves the capture of a high-value target.  But, Kyle stresses, here’s the kicker.  They never go in guns blazing.  Instead, their mission centers on precision, strategy, and unwavering focus.

Hence, special ops provide a helpful way to think about 2 Corinthians 10:5.  In that verse, the phrase ‘take captive’ comes from the Greek word aichmalotizo.  That’s a military term that means to capture an enemy combatant or lead a prisoner away.

Consequently, we need to treat our thoughts as if they were enemy soldiers in a spiritual battle.  To decisively take them prisoner.  Rather than negotiate with t hem or let them roam free.

In addition, the Greek word for ‘thought,’ noema, refers to the mind, understanding, or thought processes.  Therefore, Pastor Idleman underscores, the apostle Paul talks about more than individual thoughts in the text.  Instead, we must focus on our entire thought patterns.

Finally, Kyle paraphrases Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 10:5.  Paul essentially says,

“Hey, your mind is a battlefield, and those thoughts that go against God’s truth?  They’re the enemy.  Your job is to capture them and make them fall in line with what Christ says.”

Today’s question: What Bible verses help you on your journey of cooperation with the Holy Spirit?  Please share.
