Today Kyle Idleman and Mark E. Moore talk about the sixth surprise that reveals Jesus as greater than anyone imagined.
Surprise #6: Messiah Jesus will bring world history to its end. Certainly, when ancient Jews thought about the Messiah, they dreamt of a better government and more prosperous times. But they also expected a national hero who finally would :
- settle the score.
- defeat their enemies.
- bring justice to the nation.
While Jesus boldly claimed this role, He did so with an unexpected twist. He chose not to immediately unleash divine judgment on Israel’s enemies. Instead, Jesus introduced what scholars refer to as the “already/not yet” Kingdom. Because, even though the Judge arrived, He delayed the final verdict. Hence, that gave His enemies the chance to become allies.
Most significantly, Jesus placed the end times at the center of messianic expectation. For Jesus came to bring immediate political deliverance. As well as serving as the cosmic cornerstone of human history. In addition, the judgment Jesus promised was not only punitive, but transformative. More than an ending, it included a complete recalibration.
In conclusion, Kyle and Mark explain:
“How often, when we pray, do we expect something smaller than what God has to offer? We think Jesus will work in predictable, controllable ways. But in reality, he’s usually up to something more disruptive — and more redemptive — than we can fathom.”
