Defining blessings

By Dave Henning / May 19, 2013

Laura Story has written a devotional based on her well-known song “Blessings” entitled What If Your Blessings Come Through Raindrops?.   In the Introduction she states that the song “Blessings” is about redefining the blessings in her own life.  From her adult perspective, she recollects that as a child patriotic songs such as “God Bless America” and mealtime prayers conveyed the subtle message that God’s blessings always come in the form of health, happiness, and prosperity.

Her husband Martin’s brain tumor diagnosis dramatically altered that perspective.  As Laura and Martin studied God’s Word, they came to understand “that sometimes God blesses His children through the very absence of the very things they pray for.”  St. Paul reminds us that the Lord’s grace is sufficient for us, that His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Today Laura is not sure how she would define the term blessings, adding that her song is symbolic of the many questions God seems to have left unanswered.  Yet she has no doubt about this:

“There is a depth of intimacy with God that can only be known through suffering.  There is a reliance on Him that can only be experienced when everything else around my soul seems to give way.”

Today’s question:  Even in the midst of your adversity, what are some ways God continues to bless and sustain you?  Please take time to share.

Tomorrow’s blog: “Blessed to be a blessing”
