“God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes.”- 2 Samuel 2:25
These words of David follow the title page of More to Your Story: Discover Your Place in God’s Plan by Max Lucado, originally published as God’s Story, Your Story. In the Introduction (“When You Discover Your Place in God’s Plan . . .”), Pastor Lucado explains our desire to know our origin:
“We love to know where we came from. We need to know where we came from. Knowing connects us, links us, bonds us to something greater than we are. Knowing reminds us that we aren’t floating on isolated ponds but on a grand river.”
Therefore, Pastor Lucado asserts, God wants you to know His story. All God’s stories function as subplots to the central message of the Bible- John 3:16, the Gospel in a Nutshell.
Although we are a part of God’s quest, we easily overlook this. Life keeps dragging us down- troubles, random events, hectic schedules, haphazard occurrences.
At the age of ten, Max sang second soprano in a children’s choir. That year the local community theater group staged the play “The Wizard of Oz. The group recruited Max’s choir to play the roles of the Munchkins. The choir dutifully learned the songs and dances. However, their director neglected to mention one ‘little’ detail- the plot of the story!
As Max relates, the dress rehearsal nearly did him in:
“Life in Munchkinland can be a scary thing. Unless you’ve read the screenplay. Unless you know the final act. When you enter the stage equipped with the script, everything changes.”
Self-help gurus, talk-show hosts, and magazine headlines all tell you to look inside yourself. They send you in the wrong direction. “Your story,” Max encourages, “indwells God’s.”
