Doodlebugs of this life

By Dave Henning / September 11, 2016

“Limit your world to the doodlebugs of this life and, mark it down, you will be disappointed. . . . You were made for more than this.”- Max Lucado

“Seek those things which are above, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God.”- Colossians 3:1 (NKJV)

In Chapter 3 (“You Find Your True Home”) of More to Your Story, Pastor Max Lucado states that God equipped us at birth with a heavenly guidance system- a hunger for our heavenly home.  Yet, Max observes, we do our best to make this earthly mess our home.  In time, we actually feel at home.  However, once we get comfortable, the flies come out.  And, like the prodigal son’s fly-infested pigpen workplace, the world begins to stink.

Therefore, we choose either to pretend our temporal existence on earth becomes all God intended, or, we come to our senses.  Max notes the apostle Paul used a ‘starchy’ verb, zeteite– meaning to seek, in his letter to the Colossians.  Specifically, zeteite means “to covet earnestly, strive after, to inquire for, desire, even require.”

Max relates the time he took his nephew and niece, ages three and five, to the San Antonio Zoo.  As they reached the African section, Max told them to enter with their heads down and their eyes on the sidewalk.  Max wanted his niece and nephew to experience the full effect of the enormous animals.

However, just as Max told them to lift their heads, his nephew Lawson spotted a doodlebug.  Playing with the doodlebug superseded lions and tigers.  Pastor Lucado describes the lesson he learned about how we all play with doodlebugs:

“Myriads of mighty angels encircle us, the presence of our Maker engulfs us, the witness of a thousand galaxies and constellations calls to us, the crowning of Christ as the King of the universe waits us, but we can’t get our eyes off the doodlebugs.”

Today’s question: What doodlebugs of this life derail your heavenly focus?  Please share.
