Weak moments – press into faith

By Dave Henning / March 17, 2019

“Weak moments don’t make weak faith.  Weak moments make us even more aware of our need to press into faith.  A faith in God that helps us know that what we see isn’t all there is.”- Lysa TerKeurst

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.  And let us run with perseverance the race marked out before us.”- Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

In Chapter 8 (“Letting God of What’s Holding Us Back”) of It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way, Lysa TerKeurst defines weak moments as moments that trigger your hurt, causing a reaction out of proportion to the given situation.  Thus, when you experience a weak moment, it provides a clue telling you what you need to address right now in this part of your journey.  In other words, unattended wounds have surfaced.

As a result, Ms. TerKeurst observes, when you fail to attend to your wounds, this often leads to:

  • an all-out flood of unresolved pain
  • emotions that come out swinging wild and unrestrained
  • stewing, with accompanying hurt and sharp words
  • categorizing mounting evidence to justify your feelings and ‘true’ thoughts

Of course, in hindsight it’s easy to look back on the situation and see how much you blew everything out of proportion.  Yet, in the heat of the moment, you believe those feelings represent quite logical thoughts.  However, Lysa cautions,”Unresolved past hurts make for fantastic kindling of the most tragic kind.”

Finally, such derailing moments simply indicate that you’re a human being holding on to some unresolved hurt.  And, these messy moments offer a gift.  You stop to face what’s holding you back from moving forward.  Also, rather than limp of crawl forward due to your burdens, you run forward with great freedom in Christ.

Today’s question: How do you press in to faith in your weak moments?  Please share.
