In Chapter 7 (“Red Sea Road”) of WayMaker, Ann Voskamp underscores that God speaks in the mundane and miracle, the holy message. And in ways easily missed by our hustling culture. Furthermore, Ann notes, sometimes God calls you in real time. And He may even sound like the voice of a friend. But don’t miss that it’s His voice.
As a result, Ann counsels, sometimes dried up bushes of faith kindle into an inferno of God’s presence. However, at times, like the Israelites at the Red Sea, we look behind and ahead of us, but only envision waves of adversity. Thus, Ann writes, it’s at this point that:
” . . . despair tempts us to end it, to toss in the towel, to give up. And when it feels like all hope is lost, that’s exactly when it’s time to ask, ‘Where is my hope?’ . . . We’re not meant to find hope in anything in this world; we are meant to lose hope in all things here. . . . Faith in God always justifies hope. Hope is the one constant you can count on because you can count on Jesus constantly with you.”
In addition, Ann exhorts, sustain that hope with a holy imagination in the ways of God. Because a poverty imagination bankrupts hope. Also, hope never insists on the way it imagines. Instead, hope imagines that whatever comes our way God works out for our good.
Count on the miracle of the sustaining withness of God. Without fail, God slices an ocean of waves in half to find a way to be with you!
