Religious checklist of dos and don’ts?

By Dave Henning / May 29, 2023

“God’s goal is always that we expand our ability to move in all kinds of ways, but he also recognizes our individuality and uniqueness.  Putting the Word of God into practice isn’t a religious checklist of dos and don’ts.  It happens through everyday moments . . . in the context of a relationships.”- Alli Patterson

“You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business.  Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”- Luke 15:14-15 (NIV)

In Chapter 10 (“Your Signature Move”) of How to Stay Standing, Alli Patterson defines movement as the key to putting the words of God into action in your life.  Because you cherish your relationship with Christ, you do what his Word says.  You follow his commands.

Hence, the very essence of a relationship with Jesus consists of discovering and developing a deeper connection with Him through the practice of the Word.  A relationship that needs movement and action to thrive.  In addition, Alli explains:

“You have a thing in your friendship with Jesus.  As you put his words into practice, it will emerge and become part of how you connect and communicate.  You’ll know to expect it, and you’ll use it repeatedly over time.  There is something specific that will become a telltale sign of the pattern of obedience in your life of faith. . . . [your] signature move.”

In conclusion, Alli stresses, your signature move involves one of three actions: obey, receive, or hustle.  Alli covers the first move today.

 1.  Obey like Abraham.  Obedience represented the core of Abraham’s faith.  So, if obedience is your signature move, it flows from your belief that God’s Word is truth.  Above all, act in faithful obedience when God’s Word fails to make sense.  Or you’re waiting for the word you heard to happen.

Today’s question: Have you ever felt obligated to follow a religious checklist of dos and don’ts?  Please share.
