“That relational harmony [of shalom] is modeled by the Trinity. . . . The Trinity is three-part harmony. The early church fathers called it perichoresis. It’s a choreographed dance between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Trinity is shalom in motion.”- Mark Batterson
Mark Batterson concludes Chapter 15 of Please Sorry Thanks with the third and fourth dimensions of shalom.
3. Right relationship with others. In this quadrant, the image of God in you greets the image of God in others. The origin of a theology of dignity. The fact that there never has been and never will be anyone like you serves as a testament to the God who created you. Not as a testament to you.
Furthermore, this carries great significance. Because no one can worship God like you or for you. No one can substitute for you. However, Mark counsels, don’t give the Enemy a seat at your table. So, when the Enemy reminds you of your past, remind him of his future. Certainly, stand on the promises of God.
4. Right relationship with creation. Here, Pastor Batterson cautions, we need to avoid two mistakes. We must not (a) worship created things or (b) abuse the creation God calls us to care for. Therefore, while the Great Commission is our first concern, Mark urges us not to forget the Genesis commission:
“Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”- Genesis 1:28 (NLT)
In conclusion, Mark underscores, we glorify God as we explore, learn about, and enjoy everything He created. Most significantly, taking care of His creation for future generations! Above all, our explorations honor God when we do them for the right reasons. And when those reasons result in the right response; knowing God and making Him known.
Thus, change your words to change your life. Start with please, sorry, and thanks.
