The small moments – God’s in the details

By Dave Henning / December 26, 2021

“The next time you hear somebody say, ‘The devil is in the details,’ correct them.  God is in the details.  He works in the small moments.  The insignificant becomes significant because he is ever orchestrating the day-to-day details of innumerable lives through a millennia of time to do what he has foreordained to do.”- Max Lucado

“God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords.”- 1 Timothy 6:15 (NIV)

In Chapter 7 (“God is Loudest When He Whispers”) of Made for This Moment, Max Lucado lists several grand reversals that take place in Chapter 6 of Esther:

  • Haman intended to impale Mordecai on a spike. Instead, Haman placed him on a horse.
  • Haman planned Mordecai’s death on the gallows to the sound of jeers.  Instead, Haman led him through the streets to the sound of jeers.

Most significantly, God envisioned this hairpin U-turn.  Hence, God orchestrated the sleepless king, detailed reading of the book of records, the entry about Mordecai in that book, and Haman’s entrance into the castle court.

Furthermore, God’s grand reversals occurred even in the most pagan corner of the world, even in Xerxes’ hedonist heart.  And, even in the interplay between Xerxes and Haman.  As they decreed the deaths of thousands of Jews.  Above all, God’s still at work today.

In conclusion, Pastor Lucado offers these words of encouragement and hope:

“[Your divine reversal] is coming.  Assume that God is at work.  Move forward as if God is moving forward in your life.  Give no quarter to the voices of doubt and fear.  Don’t cower to the struggle.

You can’t see God’s hand?  Can’t make sense of his ways?  That’s okay.  Obey what you know to do, and be patient for what you don’t.”

When the world seems off the rails, hold fast to this truth: Butterfly wings (the butterfly effect) don’t determine the course of history.  God does.  He did in the days of Esther.  He still does today.”

Today’s question: How do you see God in the details of the small moments?  Please share.
