Your communion with God

By Dave Henning / July 2, 2022

“Let nothing get in the way of your communion with God, if you want to hear God communicate the way He loves you.  Do not be afraid.  Hearing comes from drawing nearer. . . .  You have to stay close enough to the Word to hear your Father’s voice.”- Ann Voskamp

“Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast [hesed-attachment] love, for in you I trust.  Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.”- Psalm 143:8 (ESV)

Ann Voskamp continues Chapter 6 of WayMaker as she stresses that communion with God serves as the landline for divine communication with God.  So, the author exhorts, lift your soul up to God.  Then listen, listen.

However, Ann observes three distinctions between what we want and what God wants.

We want:

1.  clarity

2.  a road map

3.  answers

God wants:

1.  communion

2.  a relationship

3.  our hand

Above all, Ann underscores, we need the person of God more than we need His plan for our lives.  Hence, the ear = the heart of faith.  Thus, we must listen, wait, and turn for God’s will.  In addition, the closer you find yourself to God, the closer you are to seeing more than the way through.  And you’re closer to seeing the way God is for you.

Furthermore, you know you’re heading in the right direction when your heart, thoughts, mind and ways align with the mind of Christ and the Word of God.  Not the God of your own mind and making.  Also, when you read God’s Word, you hear as much of God as you want to hear.

In conclusion, Ann exhorts:

“Unless you commit ahead of time to what you will believe about God, circumstances will dictate what you should believe about God’s heart. . . .  God knows that wrestling with some doubts is what vaccinates the soul to a pandemic of pain.”
