Gently collect the broken pieces

By Dave Henning / October 31, 2023

“When dreams shatter, we too need to give ourselves time to gently collect the broken pieces and wrap them respectfully in tears.  This is not about prematurely abandoning hope.  This is about accepting reality. . . .  Rest is essential — a need, not a luxury — when processing loss.”- Alicia Britt Chole

“[Jesus] asked them, ‘What are you discussing together as you walk along?’  They stood still, their faces downcast.”- Luke 24:17 (NIV)

In Chapter 20 (“Body Building”) of The Night is Normal, Alicia Britt Chole stresses our need to pursue rest and strength for our body with intention.

5.  When disillusioned with God, attend to your health.  This encouragement centers on stewardship. Because sometimes our health takes a hit from the fallout of our darkness coping mechanisms.  Therefore, Dr. Chole notes, some people run down their bodies in an attempt to outrun the pain.  However, others slow down — doing less of everything.  Hence, deep rest, not a stationary stance, is essential.

 6.  When disillusioned with God, give yourself permission to grieve.  Moving on to Chapter 21 (“In the Mourning”), Dr. Chole underscores our need to process our grief sincerely with our Savior.  Consequently, the author suggests, we have much to learn about the time between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.  Rather than speed-read through these disillusioning days in the disciples’ lives — since we already know the joy of the resurrection awaits.  But, Dr. Chole advises, we learn much if we slow down.

In conclusion, Dr. Chole counsels:

“Most of us will not see the resurrection of our dreams within three days.  In fact, some of our dreams are sown for future generations to reap. . . .  Our obedience is never a waste; it is our investment in a future we cannot see.

When we dream with God, even in disillusionment our dreams are not lost — they are planted.  What grows from that painful planting is God’s business.  But sowing in faith is ours, and our faithfulness in the midst of disillusionment is never sown in vain.”
