Absorbing God’s presence- Part 2

By Dave Henning / October 9, 2013

In Chapter 3 of You’ll Get Through This, Max Lucado continues his discussion of opening our souls to God’s presence.

2.  Cling to his character.  Pastor Lucado exhorts us to make an exhaustive list of God’s qualities, of who we know God to be: “Quarry from your Bible a list of the deep qualities of God, and press them into your heart.”

Max introduced Chapter 3 with the story of JJ Jasper and his wife Melanie.  Devout Christians, they poured their lives into their 4 children.  JJ especially cherished every moment he spent with his only son, five-year-old Cooper.  One day JJ and Cooper went for a ride in the family dune buggy, something they had done many times before.  As JJ made a circle on level pavement, the dune buggy flipped.  Even though Cooper was wearing a seatbelt, he did not survive the crash.

When JJ told his oldest daughter about Cooper’s death, he prefaced his announcement with these words: “I need you to hold on to everything you know of who God is.”  Max concludes that in changing times we need to lay hold of God’s unchanging character.

Today’s question: During your desert, transformational time following your ministry downsizing or vocation loss, what “deep qualities of God” have sustained you?  Please share.
