Stop being someone else’s person

By Dave Henning / May 21, 2019

“There’s so much freedom to be found when we get away from the obsession with what other people think.  It feels wonderful to stop being someone else’s person and to start fitting neatly and perfectly into the personhood God has planned for you.”- Kyle Idleman

“For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me.  So I died to the law — I stopped trying to meet all its requirements — so that I might live for God.  My old self has been crucified with Christ.  It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.  So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.  I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless.  For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.”- Galatians 2:19-21 (NLT)

Kyle Idleman concludes Chapter 5 of Don’t Give Up as he talks about one way Jesus sets us free from the weight of religion.  Hence, Jesus sets us free from the weight of what other people think FOWOT).  Next, Pastor Idleman provides a few indicators that you might be living with FOWOT.  Those indicators show that you:

  • go along with what someone else wants but secretly resent it
  • change you opinion based on what everyone else thinks
  • read into what other people say or do
  • find it very difficult to say no

Therefore, it feels wonderful to stop being someone else’s person because we’re all faulty, broken and inconsistent.  So, why depend on others accepting you when you fit neatly and perfectly into God’s perfect plan?

Today’s question: What Bible verses help you stop being someone else’s person?  Please share.
