Not-so-great expectations

Dr. J. Vernon McGee (1904-1988) founded a radio ministry entitled Thru the Bible in 1967.  The program continues to be aired on over 400 radio stations in North America.  In the program that aired Friday, April 13, 2012, Dr. McGee commented in part on John 16:33- “I (Jesus) have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”

Dr. McGee reflected that a child of God can have peace in this life- through Christ.  He emphatically stated that you will not find peace in Christian service, in the church, or in teaching a Sunday School class.

Perhaps that is what makes the loss of our called teaching or pastoral position so difficult to accept.  We expect a relatively peaceful, Christ-centered work environment.  A downsizing and its resultant trickle-down effects are anything but peaceful to you and your loved ones-in fact, the effects are quite devastating.  Our earthly sense of peace is shattered!

Dr. McGee’s words are as timely reminder that we need to rest in Jesus, our perfect peace.
