Dr. Stephen Viars addresses idolatry of the heart in his book Putting Your Past in Its Place. He states that: “Idolatry of the heart is difficult to admit, but it is often at the core of our struggle.” He then cites as an example that one “who chooses the path of bitterness may be worshipping the idol of always being treated fairly.”
In my previous blog Dr. J. Vernon McGee stated that we can’t expect peace in our Christian service. I believe he very well might have added being treated fairly to that message. While we would like to believe that a Christian institution treats its called teaching ministers more Biblically than secular counter parts, that is not a given. Furthermore, reflecting bitterly on our downsizing will not change the fact that it happened or allow us to effectively move forward in revisioning our calling.
