Today in the Fall section of Walking with God, John Eldredge discusses the agreements we’ve made about love. He notes it almost seems like his heart has a life of its own. Hence, his heart wakes up before he does and begins to assess the day’s prospects.
Furthermore, John believes this “heart activity” enables our addictions to sink their claws deeper into us. In the monotony of our day-to-day grind, our hurting and desperate hearts seek attachments for our yearnings.
Intellectually, we know the only safe place for our hearts resides in the love of God. Yet, John states, at times we have a hard time believing in or receiving the love of God. Thus, it’s hard to tell our tangled story for two reasons:
- we’re too close to our story to often achieve any clarity at all
- on a deeper level, it’s a heartbreaking story; difficult to revisit the painful details
Therefore, we must be wary of making agreements. Agreements are subtle and nasty things because they:
- pin our hearts down
- shut down our hearts by handing Satan a key to a specific room in our hearts; Satan then shuts and locks the door
- come swiftly, imperceptibly, often as our response to some message delivered with the wound
- may happen without our awareness that we made the agreement
