Securely tethered to God

By Dave Henning / December 21, 2023

“God sometimes overwhelms us with His manifest presence because we’re due for an upgrade in our perspective of who He is.  God reveals His nature so that we might grow more confident in Him.  We’re securely tethered to the most immovable, unshakable force in the universe.”- Susie Larson

“It is impossible to keep your moral practices sound and our inward attitudes right while our idea of God is erroneous or inadequate.”- A. W. Tozer, Knowledge of the Holy

Susie Larson concludes Chapter 4 of Closer Than Your Next Breath with this astute observation.  Talking about God and encountering the presence of God represent two distinctly different concepts.

For example, Moses spent years in obscurity.  With little sense of vision or direction for his life.  Thus, while tending his flocks, he stumbled upon a flaming bush.  Perhaps Moses viewed this as pure happenstance.  However, God orchestrated a divine circumstance.  And from the middle of the burning bush, the thundering voice of God spoke the name of Moses.

Like Moses, we serve, give, live.  In addition, we endure the dry days when God appears silent.  We do the best we can, trust God for the rest.  Yet, Susie notes, none of that prepares us for the moments when God makes Himself known as He breaks through our earthbound perspective.  Hence, the author explains:

“Those moments remind us that we don’t have the control we once thought.  We don’t have any power in and of ourselves.  We don’t know what we don’t know.  Whenever the Almighty moves in and reveals His holy nature to us, we have a decision to make.  Will we humble ourselves?  Take off our shoes?  Go face down?  Change direction?  Seek to know Him more?”

In conclusion, Susie exhorts, if you need an upgrade in your view of who God is, He’ll meet you on the everyday path of your life.  Also, God knows that your experiences skew your view of Him.  As a result, God longs for you to know and love Him the way He knows and loves you.

Today’s question: When do you feel securely tethered to God?  Please share.
