Holy ambition = specific calling

By Dave Henning / February 4, 2024

“I call [God’s] specific calling a holy ambition.  Sometimes it takes some time to figure out what it is, but we all have one within us — a dream of serving God in a particular way that fulfills our God-given purpose. . . .  A holy ambition takes us . . . to the intersections of our unique capacity to serve and the world’s need for what we bring.”- Chip Ingram

As Chip Ingram moves on in Chapter 12 of Discover Your True Self, he begins his discussion of five specific ways God’s called us, as found in Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians. Consequently, today Pastor Ingram covers the first two ways.

1.  God calls us into a new relationship (Ephesians 1:3-4).  Before the foundation of the world, we were chosen by Christ to be holy and blameless in His sight.  Furthermore, God called us into a close relationship with Jesus.  Rather than guilt-ridden duty.

 2.  God calls us into a new purpose (Ephesians 2:10).  Akin to your physical DNA, your spiritual DNA carries the capacity to reflect God.  To honor Him in a way no one else can.  Hence, God created you exactly the way He wanted to.  Because that enables you to fulfill your calling in a unique way.

God carefully chose your purpose.  In addition, as Chip explains, that purpose has two sides.  Chip writes:

“There are two sides to that purpose — a general one and a specific one. . . .  Like everyone, you are called to love God and love others, to do good works, to glorify God and bear fruit in His kingdom. . . .

But God also has a specific purpose for us, good works that are uniquely designed for us. . . .  No matter how minor your think your role is, His picture isn’t complete without you.  No one else can bring the same package of personality, gifts, desires, testimonies and opportunities.  You fit in such a manner as to help people see God in a way they can’t see Him through anyone else.”

Today’s question: What holy ambition fulfills your God-given purpose?  Please share.
